Let’s face it—we’ve all been there. That moment when your body feels heavy, your mind is scattered, and your motivation is at an all-time low. You’re not lazy, you’re just done. Exhausted. Empty. And yet, life doesn’t pause for you to catch your breath, does it?

I remember a point in my life when I lived this feeling daily. I was teaching over 80 classes a week. Yes, you read that right—80. My schedule was chaos, and a typical day felt like I was running around like a chicken without a head. I would dart from one yoga studio to a corporate class at Cisco, barely catching my breath before heading to teach at LinkedIn and then rushing to another class at VMware.

By the afternoon, I’d be teaching employees at Meta, followed by a stop at yet another studio or India Community Center. By the time I reached my students at the chiropractic office where I also worked, I was completely drained—physically, emotionally, and mentally.

Hunger was replaced by salads eaten on the go.

Dating? Forget about it—my evenings were spent with students in group classes, not with someone who cared for me.

My connection with others? It had quietly been replaced by a deep disconnection with myself.

And the irony? I was teaching yoga—something meant to bring balance and harmony.

But as they say, “too much of anything is bad for you,” and I was doing just that.

One day, in my 99th downward dog for the day, I cracked my shoulder bone. The pain in my left arm was excruciating, and for the first time, I couldn’t push through. That moment forced me to pause. I remember sitting there, thinking, “For how long will I keep being a yogi for thousands of students while ignoring myself?”

That’s when I knew something had to change. I needed to find a better way, and that started with letting go of what was causing me to burnout. Maybe you can relate to this feeling—the overwhelming need to keep going despite knowing deep down that you’re running on empty.

When your soul whispers for rest, it’s the universe reminding you that even the strongest lights need time to recharge. In stillness, you rediscover your power.

Why Do We Get to This Point?

You just don’t feel being unmotivated or lazy. You are being overloaded—mentally, emotionally, and physically. We live in a culture that glorifies busyness, as if exhaustion is a badge of honor. But let me tell you from experience: it’s not.

When you feel like doing nothing, it’s your body’s way of screaming, “Stop! I need a break!” Yet, instead of listening, you are probably judging yourself to push harder and end up deeper in the cycle of burnout.

So, What Can You Do When You Feel Like Doing Nothing?

“DO NOTHING” for a while if you have the luxury to do that….

but just FYI – I’ve been there, and here’s what helped me:

1. Give Yourself Permission to Pause

This was the hardest for me. I felt like every moment I stopped, I was falling behind. But here’s the truth: rest isn’t lazy; it’s necessary. Allow yourself to pause without guilt. Whether it’s sitting in silence for five minutes, taking a walk, or simply breathing deeply, start small and let yourself reset.

2. Reconnect with Your Body

When I was at my most burnt out, my body felt like a stranger. I’d ignored its signals for so long that I didn’t even know how to hear them anymore.

Start by asking yourself:

  • Am I hungry?
  • Am I tired?
  • Do I need to stretch, move, or rest?

Reconnecting with your body is the first step to regaining your energy. For me, even a few gentle yoga poses or a slow walk helped more than I expected.

3. Break the Cycle of Overwhelm

When you feel unmotivated, even small tasks can feel impossible. Break things down. Instead of thinking about the 10 things you “should” do, focus on just one thing. It could be as simple as drinking a glass of water or organizing your thoughts. Small wins build momentum.

4. Fake Smiles Works Temporarily, So Try Real Breathing

I used to plaster on a fake smile to hide how exhausted I felt. But the more I did, the more drained I became. Instead, I started using breathing techniques to calm my nervous system. One of my favorites is box breathing: inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 4, and hold for 4. It’s simple, quick, and it works.

5. Let Go of What’s Causing You Pain

This was my turning point. I had to get honest with myself: what am I holding onto that’s draining me? For me, it was over-committing and ignoring my own needs. Letting go wasn’t easy, but it was necessary. Whether it’s a toxic habit, an unhealthy expectation, or simply doing too much, releasing what no longer serves you is key to finding peace.

Let go of the noise, the chaos, and the things that weigh you down. Freedom begins when you release what no longer serves your soul.

My Turning Point

Cracking my shoulder during that downward dog was one of the worst and best things to happen to me. It forced me to reflect and make changes—not just for my students but for myself. I stopped pretending everything was fine and started prioritizing my well-being.

I learned to practice self-compassion.

I let myself rest without judgment.

I prioritized my health over the constant grind.

And slowly but surely, I found my energy returning—not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually too.

You’re Not Alone

If you’re feeling unmotivated, burnt out, or just plain exhausted, I want you to know that it’s okay to feel this way. It doesn’t mean you’re failing. It means you’re human. Listen to what your body and mind are telling you, and give yourself the care you deserve.

Because when you pause, rest, and recalibrate, you’re not losing momentum—you’re regaining the strength to move forward in a way that truly serves you.
