Stop Comparing: Rebuilding Self-Worth & Finding Your Path
๐ค๐๐ถ๐ฐ๐ธ ๐ง๐ฎ๐ธ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐๐ฎ๐๐:
- Comparison is a dangerous trap that makes us lose our authentic self by trying to imitate others.
- Cultivate your self-worth by focusing on your unique skills, passions, and defining your emotional ‘why’.
- Protect your energy and time by limiting social media distractions and toxic influences, choosing instead to measure your own progress.
Have you ever found yourself scrolling through social media, seeing someone’s highlight reel, and suddenly feeling like you’re not doing enough? Or maybe you’ve compared your journey to a friend’s, a coworker’s, or even a sibling’s, only to feel a pang of dissatisfaction? If so, you’re certainly not alone.
I know this feeling well. For years, I found myself looking at incredible women and thinking, ‘Wow, I wish I could be like her.’ I remember watching Oprah Winfrey’s show and thinking, ‘She is just so awesome, so cool.’ I even tried to talk and style my hair like her for a while!
But here’s the truth I eventually learned: I am not Oprah. And if I am not her, I cannot be her. I could learn from her, absolutely. I could absorb her wisdom and apply it to my own life. But ultimately, I had to be my own unique, authentic self. And that, my dear friend, is where the real power lies.
Why Do We Fall Into the Comparison Trap?
This habit of comparing ourselves to others is actually quite dangerous. When we constantly measure our lives against someone else’s, we inadvertently try to be someone we’re not. This isn’t just exhausting; it’s a sure way of feeling like nobody at all.
We see others’ curated lives online, full of ‘likes’ and glowing comments, and we mistake these vanity metrics for genuine happiness and fulfillment. We live in an illusory world, believing that a new boat or a first-class flight automatically equates to joy. But often, those individuals are grappling with their own struggles, perhaps even trying to be someone they’re not.
This constant comparison erodes our self-worth. It makes us feel inadequate, envious, or jealous. If you find yourself in this emotional space, I want you to pause and ask: What’s stopping you from pursuing what you truly desire?
How to Reclaim Your Unique Power
The antidote to comparison isn’t to shut off the world; it’s to turn inward and discover your own incredible skills. Ask yourself: ‘What am I really good at?’ Write it down. Maybe you’re a talented artist, a natural dancer, or someone who excels at crafts.
I had a client who worked at an accounting firm, but her true passion was doodling. Every time she doodled, she felt awesome, truly alive. Yet, she rarely made time for it. If you’re fantasizing about doing what you love but constantly doing something else, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment when you see others living their passions.
The key is to dedicate time to these activities. When you focus your energy on honing your unique skills, your mind becomes more centered. You spend less time aimlessly scrolling and more time building something meaningful for yourself. This is how we begin the journey of ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฏ๐๐ถ๐น๐ฑ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐๐ฒ๐น๐ณ ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐๐ต.
Discovering Your Uniqueness: A Journey Within
In a world of 8 billion people, your uniqueness is your superpower. What makes you, you? For me, when I was a child, my teacher was the first person to tell me, ‘Wow, ๐๐ถ๐บ๐ฝ๐น๐ฒ, you’re so good in yoga.’ That simple statement resonated deeply. I held onto that skill, cultivated it, and it blossomed into my passion.
From yoga, I realized I loved coaching people, then counseling. My skills unfolded along the way as I leaned into what felt uniquely mine. You too will discover your path by embracing your own distinctiveness. You can admire your idols and learn from their successes, but remember to bring their wisdom into your life in a way that aligns with your authentic self.
Carving Out Your Own Path and Your Emotional ‘Why’
You were born on this planet to do something amazing. What excites you? What makes you happy? Your journey is yours alone to carve out. If Oprah’s path was about spreading joy and positivity, what is your thing? Everyone possesses individual skill sets waiting to be unearthed.
Once you identify what you love, you can transform it into your passion, and if you choose, even a profitable one. But beyond the ‘what,’ we must ask ‘why.’ Your ‘why’ needs to be deeply emotional. For me, my ‘why’ for yoga was to heal my body from childhood sufferings and to reclaim my identity. I knew that if I could heal myself, I could empower other women to do the same.
That emotional connection to your purpose fuels you, creating a powerful internal compass that steers you away from comparison and towards your truth.
Becoming Your Greatest Self (And Ditching Distractions)
Imagine looking in the mirror and feeling utterly awesome. That feeling comes from consistently striving to be the greatest version of yourself. Ask yourself: What changes can I make in my habits? What am I truly best at? Write it down, and then get to work.
Part of this journey involves shedding distractions. Are you constantly checking social media? Binge-watching shows? These activities consume precious time that could be dedicated to your skill set and your goals. Stop getting distracted. Define your goal, and then go all in. I mean, all in. Even if you haven’t reached your destination yet, you can enjoy the journey of striving.
Finally, stop wasting your energy on people who bring you down, on toxic conversations, and on daily activities that don’t serve your highest good. Look at your calendar: Are your tasks aligned with your goals? Or are you just killing time?
Check your screen time, and then commit to a new way of being. Stop comparing yourself to others. Instead, compare yourself to your own progress. That’s the only metric that truly matters.
