Why Your Body Collapses After Betrayal: Nervous System Safety

Quick Takeaways

  • Recognizing subtle emotional patterns is the first step towards understanding its profound impact on your relational well-being.
  • True healing from trauma requires a holistic approach, integrating mind, body, and conscious mindset shifts.
  • Setting healthy boundaries and reframing negative thought patterns are crucial strategies for reclaiming your power.

In this episode of The Dimple Bindra Show, Dimple Bindra is joined by expert guest Dr. Jen Draper to share essential guidance on healing and transformation.

I've seen it countless times in my work: a high-achieving woman, fiercely independent, navigating the seismic shockwaves of betrayal. She doesn't fall apart. She keeps going, she stays functional, strong, almost superhuman. And then, without warning, her body begins to act up. It might be a persistent pain, an unexplained illness, or a sudden diagnosis that seems to come out of nowhere.

For so long, these women were told 'everything looks normal' even as they felt anything but. This pattern, where strength gives way to physical breakdown, is a profound message I've explored deeply. It's a message that resonated with me on a deeply personal level when I sat down with 𝗗𝗿. 𝗝𝗲𝗻 𝗗𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿 for an unforgettable conversation on 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗕𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗮 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘄.

𝗗𝗿. 𝗝𝗲𝗻, a former medical doctor with nearly 30 years in the system, walked away from it all after experiencing her own body's collapse. Her story, and her insights, are a revelation for any woman who has felt betrayed by her body after being betrayed in life.

Why Do High-Achieving Women Get Sick After Betrayal?

We are taught to be strong, to push through, especially as high-achieving women. When betrayal hits, our default is often to suppress the pain, to maintain control, to not let anyone see us crumble. But our bodies keep a different kind of score.

As 𝗗𝗿. 𝗝𝗲𝗻 so powerfully explained, this constant state of 'holding it all together' pushes our nervous system into a continuous fight-or-flight mode. This isn't meant to be a long-term state. It's a protective mode designed for brief, acute threats, followed by rest and recovery. When we override this natural rhythm, the energy of unexpressed emotion, of unresolved trauma, has to go somewhere. It manifests in our physical bodies.

𝗗𝗿. 𝗝𝗲𝗻 shared her own journey, where immense pain in her feet, diagnosed as plantar fasciitis, became an undeniable signal. Looking back, she understood it energetically: 'the steps I were taking were not in the right direction.' Her body was screaming for a redirection that her conscious mind was, at the time, too busy to heed.

Are You Outsourcing Your Healing Instead of Insourcing Your Power?

One of the most profound shifts 𝗗𝗿. 𝗝𝗲𝗻 spoke about was the difference between outsourcing and insourcing our healing. As a medical doctor, she realized that much of the medical system is designed to label symptoms and offer quick fixes - often suppressing the body's signals rather than addressing the root cause. This creates a cycle of co-dependency, where we are trained from a young age to trust external authorities more than our own bodies.

'If you say that you need a doctor, then you are outsourcing,' 𝗗𝗿. 𝗝𝗲𝗻 noted. 'You're not trusting that your body's signals are able to be interpreted within your sphere of experience.' This deeply resonated with me, echoing my own belief that we are sometimes betrayed by the outer world because we are, in essence, betraying ourselves. We hand over our power, our self-trust, hoping someone else has the answer.

What Happens When Your Subconscious Speaks Through Your Body?

For high-achieving women, the stakes feel even higher. There's an expectation to perform, to be 'fine,' to always have a plan. But what happens when an experience is too painful for our conscious mind to process? It gets suppressed into the subconscious, which, as 𝗗𝗿. 𝗝𝗲𝗻 describes, has a map that is our body.

She recounted a client who experienced daily, debilitating headaches that escalated to intense vomiting requiring intensive care during a holiday. This woman's high-performing nervous system, which kept her going at work, finally collapsed when she stopped. Through their work, the client discovered her subconscious was holding onto unexpressed emotions, creating physical stagnation. When she learned to 'insource' her healing, her symptoms resolved completely. This is not 'woo-woo'; it's neuroscience and somatics in action. Our physiology cannot differentiate between what is real and what is imagined; our thoughts profoundly impact our physical state.

When The Medical System Says 'It's In Your Head'

I've heard it countless times from my clients: 'The doctor says everything is normal, but I don't feel okay.' 𝗗𝗿. 𝗝𝗲𝗻'𝘀 experience illuminated why. The medical system, rooted in diagnosis and labels, often struggles with symptoms that don't fit a clear-cut cause. If a doctor can't find 'supporting evidence' within their training, they might label it 'idiopathic' (meaning 'we don't know') or, even worse, suggest 'it's probably in your head.'

This shames women, pushing them further into self-blame and the belief that their body's signals are a personal failure. We are capable, we are relied upon, and an illness can feel like a profound threat to that identity. But as 𝗗𝗿. 𝗝𝗲𝗻 highlighted, 'Humility is what is missing.' We need practitioners who can meet us at our level and ask, 'What do you believe is the root cause of what is going on with you right now?'

Finding Nervous System Safety: Your Pathway to Healing

So, what does 'nervous system safety' actually look like in real life for a woman healing from betrayal? It begins with a revolutionary shift: recognizing that your bodily symptoms are not failures, but profound messages.

  1. 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀, 𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗟𝗮𝗯𝗲𝗹 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗺: Instead of immediately trying to explain or suppress a sensation, simply acknowledge it. 𝗗𝗿. 𝗝𝗲𝗻 suggested that often, the bodily sensation (like a knot in your stomach or racing heart) comes first, and then the anxious thoughts try to make sense of it. Pause. What are you feeling?
  2. 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆: Tune into that sensation without judgment. Describe it to yourself: 'It's warm, it's round, it's oscillating.' This simple act begins to reprogram your subconscious, creating a new, accepting story around the sensation. It's about gratitude for the message, not fear of the illness.
  3. 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴: This means consciously choosing to trust your body's innate capacity for homeostasis - its ability to return to balance. The system often profits from your disconnection. Reconnecting with your body means reclaiming your power and becoming an 'un-patient' - an active participant in your own healing, guided by your inner wisdom.

This work isn't about perfection; it's about presence and compassion. It's about remembering that you are the highest authority for yourself. Your body is always communicating, always guiding you home.
